You can plant seeds in the same row with carrots or other vegetables; the radishes will be ready to be pulled as their neighbors are under way. Set seed 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, and 1/2 inch to 1 inch apart. Thin to 2 inches apart for all but winter radishes, which need twice the elbow room. For centuries, gardeners have anxiously watered radishes in hot, dry weather so that the roots won't respond by producing their own heat.
HARVESTING HEIRLOOM RADISHES
Gather radishes as soon as the roots have matured in order to avoid cracking, toughness, and a harsh flavor. Keep them at their best by refrigerating in sealed plastic bags.
SAVING HEIRLOOM RADISH SEEDS
Radishes sown early in the season will produce a seed head that summer. Gather the yellowed seed pods, and bring them indoors to dry. Winter radishes are stored over winter, planted out the next spring, and allowed to complete their growth cycle.
